Name: Leland "Apollo" Adama
Canon: Battlestar Galactica
Original or Alternate Universe: Original universe
Canon Point: Season 3, Episode 17 - just moments before he sees Kara's Viper explode
Number: 187

Setting: At this canon point, mostly across a fleet of several dozen spaceships. Primarily set on the Battlestar known as Galactica. The series starts with the twelve habitable human colonies being obliterated by nuclear attacks. After that, there are several short-term encounters with various planets (habitable and non) but the majority of the series is set in deep space. (Wiki One and Wiki Two)

History: Lee Adama entered the military when he came of age, as did his younger brother Zak who we learn died in flight before the Cylon attack on the colonies. The Adama boys held a strong military presence thanks to their father William. William Adama was the commanding officer of the Battlestar Galactica, the last of a flagging fleet of retro-technology fighters designed to thwart the hostile intentions of machines known as the Cylons. He remained Commander, with an eventual promotion to Admiral, for the duration of the series. The stage for Lee's development was set early on, when the Twelve Colonies, including Lee's own homeworld of Caprica, were destroyed in a calculated attempt by the Cylons to eradicate the human race. All twelve planets were decimated by widespread nuclear blasts. Of billions, only 50,000 some odd human beings survived. Lee and the rest Galatica crew are left with only one Battlestar and a vulnerable fleet of colonial ships that have the last remnants of humanity. Among the dead were Lee's mother, his fiancee, and his unborn child. While many may have lost more, Lee's own list combined with the the loss of nearly his entire species, weighed heavily on his heart.

Like any military man, Lee had to turn from his past and look to the future if he wanted the remains of humanity to survive. Soon after the attacks and subsequent firefights take the lives of several pilots, Lee took on the position of CAG, Commander Air Group. He pulled together a rag tag band of Viper pilots and under his father's command also initiated training for new recruits from the colonial fleet. He, along with several other notables, were the main team responsible for both reconnaissance and engaging Cylon raiders in flight combat. They were, and are, the primary line of defense for Galactica, barring the massive Battlestar's own weaponry. As the series goes on, Lee developed close affections with the majority of his team. Every casualty hit him hard, though he later admitted that he was beginning to have trouble remembering all the names of those they've lost in the years since the Twelve Colonies' demise.

In spite of repeated and ongoing complications with his father, Lee ascended the ranks of the Colonial military efficiently in the aftermath of the Cylon attack. In less than two years he moved from being Captain, to CAG, to Major, and, soon after, Commander. Lee was always motivated to responsible action compelled by his sense of duty and the safety of the colonial fleet. Some of his decisions left him at odds with his father, eventually landing him in the brig.

Lee went so far as to defy the chain of command and break the President out of jail when she was imprisoned unfairly. While such actions could easily be construed as insubordination, his choices were a result of dedication to democracy. Lee's actions were perfectly in line with his interpretation of the laws that give both the government and the military their power. He knew it may have devastated any future with the military, Galactica, and his father but it was the only path Lee was willing to walk. He couldn't bring himself to commit to something that defied everything he believes in.

During his time with President Roslin Lee, and a small collection of supporters, they head to a planet known as Kobol. In the myths and legendary of the people of the Twelve Colonies that world was known as the origin of all man kind. Thousands of years after the height of its civilization, Kobol was nothing but ruins. And yet, it called to the President with promises of directions toward Earth. Earth, a potential new homeland for those humans who still remained. With the Arrow of Apollo that Kara Thrace retrieved from a decimated Caprica, the Temple of Athena would supposedly point the way. Following scripture and the guidance of a Cylon turned human supporter, Sharon Valerii, was the only way to find the Temple. It took them time to navigate the mountains surrounding the temple. Enough time that a task force from Galactica was able to catch up with Roslin's group. Roslin and the elder Adama managed to work out their differences, agreeing to unite once more in a true search for Earth.

Lee ended up back on Galactica, reunited with his father and reinstated as an officer during the reunification of the fleet. A short time later, Lee's ability to act was once again put to the test. The fleet managed to cross paths with a second Battlestar, the Pegasus. His calm head prevailed when left on an abandoned command deck when senior officers proved untrustworthy and unreliable. He managed to save the ship, and the majority of the crew, from destruction by thousands of Cylon attackers. That controlled mind, capable of combining strategy and creativity, was a large part of why he was promoted to Battlestar Pegasus Commander after the conflict's conclusion. He remained commander for a period of time, mostly successful throughout.

During that time Lee married, though it's made clear that Lieutenant Anastasia Dualla wasn't his first choice in wife. After the discovery of a barely livable planet, the fleet at large decided to colonize the place. Shortly after landing, Lee confessed his love to Kara. She reciprocated, at first, but ultimately abandoned Lee for a sudden, surprise marriage to Sam Anders. Lee is left stunned, and devastated, and all too happy to leave New Caprica for the Pegasus in orbit with Galactica. His subsequent marriage to Dee was clearly reactionary and it's clear he wasn't nearly as invested as she was.

Lee spent a decent portion of the series lamenting his lack of a meaningful relationship with Kara Thrace. They were volatile when joined and couldn't keep it together when they were apart. While he loved his wife, it was clear he also loved his best friend. Sometimes that left him with even more complicated choices to make. His inability to handle his feelings for both women lead him to drinking and doubt. While he eventually called a halt on his affair, ultimately his heart still wandered.

New Caprica proved to be hospitable but only in the worst sense of the word. Matters grew worse when the Cylons discovered the new human colony. Both Battlestars jumped to avoid detection, regrouping to try and figure out how they would rescue the remains of their people on New Caprica. Life as Commander ended with having to use the Pegasus itself as a weapon. Left with no other viable tactical choice, he crashed the ship into an enemy base star and destroyed the Cylon ship. It was, potentially, a waste but certainly a success as very few vital lives were lost and those that remained were saved.

In time Lee ended up exactly where he started, as CAG on Galactica. Too many pilots had been lost and Lee was too good to be grounded and uninvolved in aspects of the Viper corp. He took his job as seriously as ever, glad to be back in a familiar setting and out of the spotlight that colored him to look like a sympathizer. He even offered to fly wingman when Kara had trouble regaining her confidence in the cockpit. Lee was in the process of begging Kara not to let her Viper go below the atmospheric threshold and self destruct when he wakes up on Tranquility.

Personality: Like everyone on Battlestar Galactica, Lee accepts that reality has been forever changed by the Cylon onslaught. Accepting this reality is the only reason he can continue to do some of the things he is ordered. The untimely death of his brother overshadowed his service long before the Cylons initiated the destruction of Caprica and the other colonies. While many in fleet look at photos of the dead, it takes years for Lee to even address the loss of his fiancee and unborn child in the Cylon attack. His success with struggling to process in the present proves lacking when compared to some of the other members of Galactica. Adding other loved ones to an already immeasurable weight leaves him exhausted and distance, burying even more as time passes.

At the start of the series, things between Lee and his father are so strained that their relationship is practically nonexistent. He blames his father for his brother's death and its only after the fallout of the initial Cylon attack that he learns responsibility wasn't solely in the lap of his father. This, coupled with the human race being reduced to less than fifty thousand people, helps propel both Adamas to move beyond their past troubles. They continue to have their share disagreements, some which weave back and forth across the line of insubordination on Lee's part, but their overall communication improves steadily. For both, overcoming their stubborn nature takes time.

Stubbornness is an ongoing problem for Lee. Throughout the series, he is adamant about following rules and and ascribed structures, be they militaristic, political, etc. Order, for Lee, is sacrosanct. Early on he's tasked with the destruction of a civilian ship that's equipped with nuclear weapons. It's an order, for the good of the fleet, and as a responsible officer he's compelled to follow. In spite of the deaths involved, and the guilt he is sure to carry, Lee does as ordered. Destruction of a civilian ship, likely overrun by Cylons but not confirmed, is no easy thing to resolve and it becomes the first of many impossible choices he has to live with. When superiors balk at his backing the new President of the Colonies, Lee maintains his support. The President took her position through the proper channels established by the civilians in the Twelve Colonies and Lee does not want to be a part of using the military to violate that. Allowing himself to arbitrarily buck order is something he steadfastly refuses, even in times where his heart is galaxies away from supporting the task at hand.

As the series continues Lee excels at making similarly hard decisions and unpopular choices. Lee's duty is to assure the long-term survival of humanity and to preserve what society remains. He supports a fair trial for a man, Gaius Baltar, responsible for the security violations that caused the initial Cylon success at human eradication, along with the repeated subjugation of the entire human species on New Caprica. Lee found the man absolutely despicable but his promise to uphold the legal rights of the colonial fleet outweighed personal preference and to that end Lee did everything he could to ensure whatever outcome there was, it was fair. The fine line that separates them all from the Cylons is something that must be respected if there is any hope for the future.

Ultimately, his loyalties lie with the human race as a whole. He will do whatever it might take to ensure the safety of the most individuals in a given circumstance. Infrequently, though it happens in canon, this has left him at odds with an order. In those cases he has accepted responsibility, including the possible sanctions, prison time, and all the other trappings that accepting responsibility entails. The essence of the rules, what those pieces of structure represent, are the foundation of Lee's conduct. Humanity's survival is paramount.

As a result, despite his usually predictable moral compass, Lee spends a lot of time haunted by the actions he's been compelled to follow through. Some are for the good of the colonies and other are a result of merely being human and fallible. The world doesn't exist in black and white and it's those grey areas that leave Lee uncertain. Even though he arrives at a point where the names of those lost have begun to fade, even the names of those once friends, he carries the guilt with him daily. Specifics may not last but the emotions attached to those specifics survive. There are multitudes of unfortunate choices Lee also makes in his personal life. Variable temper, cheating on his wife, Lee's list of failures may be not be as long as some but his ledger is by no means clear. Sleep comes and goes in frequency and quality and there are some days where, when he closes his eyes for too long, memories come back as real as the day they took place.

Lee will put his life on the line without a moment's hesitation if that's what is required of him. Just before his promotion to Commander, he adapted in under a minute to the volatile situation at hand on the Pegasus. He managed to save the majority of the crew and keep the ship intact, all while fighting off multiple enemy base ships. When crunch time hits, Lee Adama can always be counted on to think with a clear, rational mind. Tactics combined with reason usually guide his hand. This will serve him well when interacting with new and old faces alike in game. He has a very finely honed ability to separate feelings and emotions from decisions he makes until he can try and resolve, or repress, them in private.

While he's typically excellent on the job, his ability to tackle personal issues unrelated to work leaves something to be desired. Lee avoids dealing with far too much and, from time to time, it catches up with him. Once he's in private, sometimes those hidden moments come unburied. They rise up from his gut, threatening to suffocate him. There are times he ends up coming to blows with his friends and others where he turns to drinking as a means to forget. Violence and, almost as frequently, alcohol, work in the short term but prove ineffective in the long run. They prove to just be more ways to try ignore the problems he doesn't have to immediately fix. Nothing actually supplants the guilt and unhappiness.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Lee has no supernatural capabilities. However, he's incredibly talented with tactics and military skills. Lee is highly skilled pilot, a solid shot with handguns and mounted fighter vessel weapons, and quite adept at hand to hand combat. Additionally, he has has a human side many military officers lack. Diplomacy comes easily to him . Oh... and rumor has it he's a stellar cook when he can get his hands on ingredients and a proper kitchen.

As far as weaknesses go, Lee's emotional depth tends to come off shallow. His surface reactions don't always speak to what he feels and, when they do, they're usually a result of direct provocation. Moreover he tends to grow defensive when unexpectedly questioned regarding personal feelings.

The first day on Tranquility had been long. It wasn't the hours Lee had spent awake or the effort he'd exerted. No, it was the Caprica shattering news he seemed to be getting in full force since his arrival. It had taken some convincing to believe he wasn't actually a Cylon, himself. Some small part of him still managed to have doubt. And then there was the presence of his father, among others. He'd never have wished this place on any of them, even Gaeta. As for Six. That part troubled him more than any other. If there was one certain Cylon, Lee couldn't help but expect more.

After a while, with the weight of all those things had driven him to absolute sleeplessness. Lee didn't feel safe in his assigned space so he felt no better or worse taking to the halls to get a feel for the ship's layout. It was an alien aesthetic and seemed to be just a bit random but in enough time he found his way through the gardens and to places with food.

He may have wandered for close to two hours but it was worth it. There was a sort of system to the way things connected, it had just taken a while and a willingness to wander before Lee got it down enough that he expected to only get lost half the time rather than entirely. As it was, his missteps had taken him to a few things that Galactica couldn't boast, great ship that she was.

This was just enough to but a bit of an up turn on Lee's frustrating day. Not just blue algae in some unnecessary combination but actual food someone would want to eat. There was tea and booze that managed to be real rather than distilled from gods only knew what in a mechanics room.

"Alright then, if I can't sleep my way through this I'll drink it and eat it instead."

Months without the small creature comforts had felt like ages. Lee should have felt guilty for enjoying that part of the situation but he couldn't. It was frakked up enough he'd ended up in an alternate reality, he reasoned he didn't need to feel entirely miserable while doing it.

"So say we all," Lee managed to mumble in a sad toast to the empty chairs around him before he did his best to drown out his problems.

Comms Sample:
[Lees face appears on the video screen. He does his best to avoid an outright grimace but he looks disgruntled none-the-less.]

My understanding is that someone around here can make use of an experienced pilot?

I've trained and flown with full Viper squadrons. Before I ended up here [that does sound just a bit flatter] I had my time as Commander of a Battlestar, and its crew. If I'm going to be stuck, I'd rather be doing something than nothing at all.

[That's about as diplomatic as he can sound when trying to get himself better integrated during his forced stay.]

Well. If you have any suggestions, throw them at me.
